Oscar Pistorius Trial: Photos Of Dead Reeva Steenkamp Revealed

Crime scene photos from the Oscar Pistorius trial over the death of Reeva Steenkamp —the deceased South African model and former girlfriend of the disgraced Olympian — have been released at the request of Barry Steenkamp, the victim’s father.

Judge Thokozile Masipa, the man presiding over the Reeva Steenkamp murder trial, has allowed graphic, bloodied photos of Reeva to be made public and it shows the terrible impact Black Talon rounds made on the body of Reeva.

Steenkamp was found dead with several gunshot wounds after being shot by Pistorius on Valentine’s Day 2013. The court in Pretoria, South Africa was filled with tears after Barry Steenkamp’s testimony recalled the moments when his wife, June Steenkamp, called him about their daughter’s death. He described the surreal feeling and instances where he was going “mental” over the death of his daughter.

The decision to release the photos came after a dramatic scene where the former Paralympic and Olympic athlete walked around the courtroom without his prosthetic legs in an attempt to show his vulnerability as a disabled man. Pistorius claimed that he thought an intruder was in the bathroom while Reeva was on the bed. He stated that he shouted for Reeva to call the police and started firing at the bathroom door.

The South African investigators revealed that Pistorius might have changed Reeva’s clothes after he killed her. The side argues that the evidence shows the wounds on Reeva’s body doesn’t match the tear of the top she was wearing.

Steenkamp’s parents claimed that their daughter had already packed her things and was ready to leave the former Paralympian who has an anxiety disorder. During the third day of Pistorius’ sentencing trial, Barry Steenkamp told the court that Pistorius must pay for what he did. When asked what kind of punishment does he want, he answered that his family is willing to accept the court’s verdict as long as Pistorius will pay for his crime.

Barry Steenkamp wanted the grizzly images of his daughter’s attack to released to the public as a warning to others who may be thinking of using firearms.

Judge Thokozile Masipa approved the request of Chief Prosecutor Gerrie Nel to release the photos of Reeva Steenkamp’s fatal wounds. The released photos that show the wounds on Reeva Steenkamp’s head after she was shot by Pistorius.
