REASONS WHY YOU MUST INVEST IN AFRICAN TECH STARTUPS

9 reasons to invest in African tech startups

Investments in African tech startups are on the rise, especially from overseas firms and individuals.
African tech startups received a total amount of funding in excess of US$185.7 million in 2015, according to data compiled by Disrupt Africa, and there is every reason to expect this will grow in 2016.
But why the surge in interest? Here are some reasons why African tech startup funding is on the rise, and will continue to increase.
High level of innovation
Visit the tech ecosystems of Lagos, Nairobi and Cape Town, or even further afield, and you cannot fail to see high levels of disruptive innovation. From the likes of Rwanda’s SafeMotos, which marries vehicle telematics with an on-demand motorcycle taxi platform, to South Africa’s Custos Media Technologies, which is using the blockchain to tackle digital piracy, innovation is all around. And investors like innovation.
Great social impact
Around 80 per cent of Africa’s population – approximately 330 million adults – lacks access to formal financial services. As many as 620 million people on the continent lack access to power. These two statistics alone demonstrate the potential impact technological solutions addressing these issues can have, and speak to the high level of interest from impact investors in fintech and solar startups especially.
Sizeable return opportunities
There may be a great deal of social good to be done by investing in African startups, but that does not mean funding businesses on the continent is a charitable act. If startups can find effective ways of, say, providing millions of people with access to mobile insurance products, or rolling out pay-as-you-go solar products across whole regions, serious returns on investment can be made. Which probably speaks to the continuing willingness to pump cash into the likes of Nomanini and M-KOPA Solar.
You’re in good company
We know investors are like lemmings, investors have told us so. They like to see other people taking the plunge; they like strength in numbers. And with major international VC funds like Amadeus and EchoVC, as well as high profile individuals such as Bill GatesSteve CaseTim Draper and even Mark Zuckerberg, investing in African tech startups, there is clear evidence that those that should know consider the space to be a worthwhile investment.
Skills are improving
There have been concerns in the past about the level of entrepreneurial talent in Africa, as well as the technological skills of young African developers. But this is abating as success stories continue to roll out of the continent, while the likes of Andela and codeX are making great strides in training the next generation of coders, while even Google has got in on the act. Old fears that skills levels in Africa were just not high enough are declining.
The support ecosystem is there
Africa’s tech hubs have been much discussed, and sometimes their role has been overplayed, but there is no denying that the large number and high quality of these hubs has contributed to the development of the ecosystem and assisted a great number of startups. From Zambia’s BongoHive to Cameroon’s ActivSpaces, tech hubs are ensuring African startups develop as planned and are investment-ready.
The rising middle class
Defining the exact scope of Africa’s middle class is tough, as estimates vary wildly, but it is undeniable that it is growing. And as the middle class grows, so to does spending power, and demand for services such as on-demand home cleaning services and virtual personal assistants. This process will continue, and investors would be advised to get ahead of the game.
Governments are backing it
Governments have long been accused of neglecting the growing tech startup ecosystems in Africa, but that is no longer the case. Governments as diverse in outlook as South AfricaKenyaRwanda and Madagascar are, to different extents, playing a greater part in supporting the space, with the Egyptian government even launching its own fund. This friendly environment will only attract investment.
It’s the final frontier
Whereas in the developed world, the vast majority of people have mobile phones, are online, make use of on-demand services, and consume all sorts of tech, that is not the case yet in Africa. With one billion people on the continent, and the majority of them still not connected to the internet, or banked, or even having power in their homes, Africa is a land of great opportunity for growth. Global tech giants like Microsoft and Google have realised this, and investors have too.

NIGERIA: THE STATE OF A NATION: A CHANGE THAT WAS NEVER EXPECTED

A CASE FOR CHANGE: IS THIS THE CHANGE WE VOTED FOR?

By: Thomas Chiedozie Williams

It's no longer news that things are tough in Nigeria, due to the current hike in price of goods, as a result to the increment of the fuel pump price to N145/L, not to talk of the dollar dilemma which has also affected importation.

"Rice, Yam and Groundnut oil cost so much now, mention but a few, meat plus Kerosene? You have to put it on lock-down, then again if you recall how much you bought tomatoes...ha ha ha ha...that stew must be under your watchful eyes...no story".

While people were still trying to adjust themselves to this unforeseen circumstance, after their hope for a miracle towards a better living in the name of "CHANGE" was dashed to the floor. the tomato scarcity came in with a tidal wave that swept many people off their feet and left some standing on a single toe while looking for what to use as support.

This tragic incident from the let down of the Moses whom they believe will lead them out of Egypt to the promised land where N1 = 1$, in fact even when the Moses of the bible took the children of Israel through the desert due to the rebellion of their fathers God still made provision for the journey even though it took longer than expected, But the Moses to whom was to lead the people of Nigeria, did not consider how these people will survive. this realization has made good loving, peaceful and hardworking Nigerians shrink into themselves like snails, Nigerians who use to be cheerful have become bitter, aggressive and even more desperate than ever.

Hope seems far away, even the optimist has began to waver in their view, those still clinging on to hope they have become like people who receive news of a plane crash or a shipwreck carrying a loved one who was to be home, out of shock and disbelief of the inevitable, day by day, they go to the harbor or the airport waiting for their loved one to arrive with their names written on plaques.

The picture you see tells a story itself. salaries remain the same, cost of living has increased over 200%.

Nigerians have been starved to become weak to fight for what is theirs, we have become like a commander who lost 80% of his men in an ambush right in front of him, he watched while the enemy slaughtered his men, nothing can break a good captain than watching your men loose their lives without you being able to do anything. Nigerians have been broken, beaten and tied hands behind their back, all they can do is watch and wait.

Propaganda everywhere, the "CHANGE" theory is a good one that Nigerians were ready to support, Nigerians are simple people, who only care for what they will eat, wear, how to pay their bills and live a peaceful life, there is a slogan common in Nigeria, "Nobody want to die but everybody wants to go to heaven ",  "Abeg I no want wahala o"( meaning please let me be in peace, I don't want any trouble).

The major things the good people of Nigeria are asking from their Moses are:

  • Good road Network
  • Power supply even though it's not up to 24hrs, at least 12hrs
  • An investable economy
  • Water
  • Shelter
  • Access to food( Agricultural produce, local)
  • Easy access to importation (competitive price)
  • Job Creation ( instead of building factories, industries, refineries outside the country then import same product inside, why not build the factories here?
Are these too much to ask for? I did not even add good health facilities, schools e.t.c... I believe when a man has things working for him to a certain percentage he will be healthy because his mind will be at rest.

NIGERIA NEEDS CHANGE NOT THE WORD CHANGE, AND NIGERIANS ARE READY FOR A CHANGE,

We are a democratic government, let's practice democracy, not DICTO-CRACY

NIGERIA, A GREAT NATION !!!!

NIGERIANS, A STRIVING PEACEFUL PEOPLE !!!!

GOD BLESS NIGERIA !!!

LESSONS FROM JIM CARREY: HOW I PERSIVERED

NEVER GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAM

"I wrote myself a cheque for $10 million for acting services rendered, gave myself five years and dated it thanksgiving 1995. I put it in my wallet and it deteriorated and deteriorated".

"Life opens up opportunities to you, and you either take them or you stay afraid of taking them".

When Jim was 12, his dad lost his job and all they had, including their house. Forcing them to live in a van for sometime. Jim and his dad had to work together as security guards to support the family. This privation continued unabated for years. Jim long had a dream of becoming a comic actor. So he moved from audition to audition without breaking even.

Then came the year 1990 and Jim Carrey 28, broke and frustrated decided to write himself a cheque. Jim, took up acting and went from year to year not seeing his dream accomplished. In 1994, he had what could be called a break into Hollywood with his role in Pet Detective and The Mask. Then just before thanksgiving 1995, Jim landed his breakthrough role in Dumb and Dumber and was paid $10 million for his role. Ever since then, Jim's subsequent movies have grossed over a billion dollars .

It is better to risk starving to death than surrender. If you give up on your dreams, what's left?

Friends, what are you committing your life to. What goal are you chasing or are you just drifting through life with no clearly defined goal. If you're to write yourself a cheque now, how much is it going to be and are you willing to pursue  your goal regardless. Are you willing to hang in there till its achieved or are you going to quit and throw in the towel. Five years from now, what will be the story of your enterprise, of your endeavor and ultimately your life.

"If you give up on your dreams, what's left". ~ Jim Carrey.

AISHA BUHARI: CAN KILL AYO FAYOSE - PDP

AISHA BUHARI / FASOYE HALLIBURTON SCANDAL RIFF

Nigeria’s major opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that the wife of the President, Aisha Buhari may assassinate Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti state.
Governor Fayose in a statement signed by his chief press secretary, Idowu Adelusi alleged that Mrs Buhari was indicted in the Halliburton scandal.
Reacting to Fayose’s claim, the presidency and former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Lamorde dismissed reports that the President’s wife participated in the bribery scandal involving the United States Congressman, Williams Jefferson.
The argument took a dramatic turn when Mrs Buhari took to Twitter describing the governor as an “Unchained Mad Dog.” The tweets were deleted about two hours later.
In a reaction, the PDP through its official Twitter handle (@PdpNigeria) said: “Governor Fayose may have to take extra security measures to prevent Aisha Buhari or the 1st family from assassinating him.”
Meanwhile, the PDP elders forum in Ekiti state has slammed the Federal Government for allegedly intimidating and harassing the governor.

WHAT YOU MUST KNOW ABOUT MR RIGHT

10 THINGS YOU MUST KNOW ABOUT MR RIGHT

featured image

First of all, he EXISTS.

If you haven’t found your perfect partner yet, don’t worry. You don’t have to be the youngest, slimmest or coolest woman around to find your Mr. Right. (In fact, age and maturity are a plus.)

Here are the top 10 things you MUST know about Mr. Right:

1. He Exists

This is really important. Have you been telling yourself he’s too good to be true? The reality is, he exists. But if you don’t believe it, you’re going to have a much harder time finding him.

Think Tinkerbell in Peter Pan. Every time someone says, “I don’t believe in fairies,” a fairy dies. It’s not that extreme, but still … you get the picture.

2. He’s Looking For You, Too

He doesn’t want to be stuck in the wrong relationship any more than you do. Like you, he’s looking. You may need to help him a bit, but avoid throwing yourself at him — just be someone it feels great to be around.

3. He Doesn’t Have A Shelf-Life (And Neither Do You)

Truly. You don’t know when the right time is for you to meet. For you to be a great partner, you have to reach a certain level of emotional maturity, which takes time and experience. Don’t try to cheat yourself (and him) by rushing it.

4. He Cares About The Little Things

What makes a good romantic movie is nothing like what makes a good long-term relationship — real life lasts rather longer than the 120 minutes.

You need to think about the little things you want because, in a long-term relationship, the small things are usually the big things. How do you want to feel about going to the supermarket together? Or facing difficulties together? Or doing housework together?

5. He’s Happy

It’s a myth that drama and being temperamental are sexy. The reality is, high maintenance behaviors all eventually become a pain in the butt (rather than sexy).

You don’t really want to be around someone with rollercoaster-like moods long-term, do you? Happiness is a much more valuable commodity. You need to be happy and be with someone who is happy. It’s that simple.

6. He’s More Than Just Great Sex

I’m not saying that there is anything wrong with great sex — there isn’t. However, assuming great sex is enough to make a great relationship is a very bad idea.

You want someone who can love you with his words and actions (as well as great sex). Sex is simply one delicious part of what should be a delicious relationship.

7. He Appreciates You

Living with someone long-term is like living under a microscope — you get to see each other’s faults in glorious technicolor. Everyone has faults and everyone’s faults can be irritating.

The best known antidote to irritation is appreciation. Choose someone — and be someone — truly appreciative of all that is great about their partner.

8. He Makes You Laugh

Couples who laugh together have a better chance of staying together long-term than couples who don’t. The more you laugh, the more you’ll be able to laugh your way through relationship challenges. It’s seriously good for the health of your relationship!

9. He’s Not Perfect (Nobody Is)

He just needs to be the right kind of imperfect. If you’re a neat freak and he’s … not, that probably won’t be a great fit. But if you both feel reasonably relaxed about a few articles of clothing on the bathroom floor, you’ll have a much better chance together.

10. He’s A Gentleman

If you are thinking long-term, wouldn’t you like to be with someone who is gentle on your feelings? Gentleness is frequently undervalued and has a very long shelf-life. It’s also great your emotional health.

OFF DUTY : KUNLE AFOLAYAN

PERSISTENT DISPLAY OF UNRIVALED BRILLIANCE IN MOVIE PRODUCTION

Ace Director Kunle Afolayan Shares the “Keys to his Success” in the latest edition of BusinessDay’s “Off Duty Magazine”

Kunle-Afolayan-Off-Duty-Business-Day-

Kunle Afolayan is the cover star of the most recent BusinessDay’s Off Dutymagazine.
Since 2005, he has been active in the Nigerian film industry and has made extremely popular movies including, The Figurine: Araromire which was in the Yoruba and English languages and Phone Swap which featured Wale Ojo, Joke Silva, Nse Ikpe Etim and the legendary Chika OkpalaThe Figurine won five major awards in the African Film Academy and experienced tremendous success in the Nigerian movie theatres.
In this issue of Off Duty, he speaks to Business Day’s Kemi Ajumobi where he talks about his craft, challenges and the some keys to success.
Here’s an excerpt of his interview:
On his journey into film making
I started acting in 1998. I started my own company in 2005. First of all, I retired as a banker, then, I went into acting and later into making my own movies. Everybody has their own ideas and what prompts them to make their movies. It’s what and how they think that makes them produce the movies that they do. Everybody can’t think the same way or alike.
On the secret behind his successful movies
Truth is there is no secret. I do a lot of thinking. I look at the way things are, the things happening around me and I don’t stay idle. Just barely from thinking alone, I construct movies in my mind. My background and where I am from also influences the movies I create. Whenever I want to produce a movie, I make sure that I leave people thinking, I make them ask questions, I usually don’t conclude my movies, I let viewers talk about it, I leave them wondering. I try not to entertain alone but also to get them thinking.
On the choice of characters in his movies
Once I have a script, I already have an idea of what I am looking for. Sometimes, I already have established actors in mind. Sometimes, I just want to throw it open and have new characters come try their luck. It’s important that you must depict the characters that you want. Even if you don’t have all of it, once I see an element in you, I can groom you.
HP G4 LAPTOP | 4G - 1TB HDD

On making “October 1st” and “The CEO”
October 1st was a good movie. It got people thinking and asking questions. So also the CEO as well, it’s a really fascinating movie. Something that will keep you on edge and make you ask lots of questions. Both of them have good productions. Everything about both of them was good.
On the cost of producing “The CEO” and October 1st”
The cost for CEO is around 2 million dollars and the official release is going to be on July 15th. That is the cinema release. October 1st cost about 2 million dollars as well. I can’t really lay my hands on how much I really made from the movie. I guess I made quite a lot but can’t say precisely.
On his endorsements and alliances
At the moment, I am brand Ambassador to Air France, Peugeot Nigeria andHebron. It’s a good thing that these industries are seeing value in Nigerian films and industry. It’s something that is really good for the industry and majority of them are not even Nigerian companies. They have their head office outside of Nigeria and they still see the need in engaging and adding value to Nigerian film industry.
On the influence of Nigerian economy on film making
The economic situation is of course not easy but then, I thank God for those industries that help to support the film industry. Truly, it hasn’t been easy. The economic situation hasn’t been fair too but God has taken full control of all of it.
On how film makers can make money for their gift
I think producers should look at the way things are in Nigeria first. Even those producers that studied abroad, they should also assess the environment first, then add the ideas together. It is not enough studying abroad, it’s necessary that you look at the environment you want to produce that particular movie. It’s not enough making movies, but then you should take into consideration what the viewers like and their expectations. This would help tremendously.
His advice to actors, producers, directors who are discouraged and struggling
My advice would be that they shouldn’t give up, be persistent and put in your best.

STARTUPS ENTREPRENEURS: WHAT ARE YOUR SET BACKS? BEST BUSINESS ADVICE FROM SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS OWNERS

IMPORTANT DECISIONS: FOR BUSINESS OWNERS AND STARTUPS

By: Thomas Chiedozie Williams

It's so easy to get excited when you are set to establish your business, some of the things people ignore are;

  • Location
  • Environment

LOCATION: Picking the right location as a head office of your business is very important, you need a location that is economically and business oriented.

Location is key, you need a central location where anyone can be able to access, the truth is we humans are naturally lazy and we love alternatives, we like things that are arms reach, so imagine your business is located at a place where it's difficult to access both in and out, you will loose potential customers that need your service.

Many businesses chose to strategically locate in certain areas, due to the highly-skilled and educated workforce, of innovation with easy access to major transportation hubs, reasonable lease rates, affordable housing and an abundance of culture and natural resources.

ENVIRONMENT: Another key factor to consider is the environment, as mentioned in the location, you need a profitable business environment for your business, take a good stock of the surroundings, what kind of buildings are there, businesses, people easy access to various day to day activities, is the environment business friendly? are there limitations to certain products ?

It is important that you have a good business environment for your business, especially and that requires you understanding the kind of product that can be sold at the location you have chosen, having a good idea of the kind of services that can be rendered in the environment will help you make good profit and sustain a good business that will definitely expand with time.

Most people fail to identify their customers in the environment after chosen a location to set their business, ignoring the potentials of the inhabitants that can be harnessed to their business advantage,
having a business in a business friendly environment can make you versatile and flexible when executing your business idea, adding diversity to your business plan.

Here are some Business Advice from Successful Small Business Owners and Entrepreneurs.

"Surround yourself with the best people you can and give them an opportunity to do what they love to do best. Each one of my staff and faculty is a leader themselves. I cannot succeed without them."
ARIZONA: John Stonecipher, President, and CEO of Guidance Aviation Inc.

"Try to find a mentor if possible. I was incredibly fortunate to have had Art Christoffersen as my business partner ... He was a great sounding board and really never told me what to do, but he asked some great questions that led me to the answer."
OREGON: Judith Huck, President Classique Floors Inc.

"Try to find a mentor if possible. I was incredibly fortunate to have had Art Christoffersen as my business partner ... He was a great sounding board and really never told me what to do, but he asked some great questions that led me to the answer."
IOWA: Charles Hammond, President, and CEO, Raining Rose

"I guess I would say don't be afraid. If they have a business idea but are afraid because of a lack of funding or experience and so on, I have to tell them don't worry, these are not going to be an issue in this country."
KENTUCKY: Dr. Mehdi Yazdanpanah, CEO, Founder of NaugaNeedles

"The advice I'd give is to make as many mistakes as you can, as fast as you can. Get them out of the way. No one hits home runs right away."
CONNECTICUT: Chris Runyan, President GameXChange

"Do not underestimate the amount of effort, perseverance, and discipline that is required to be successful. I cannot stress that enough. There will be problems and you must be ready mentally, physically, and spiritually to deal with them. If you are starting a business to get rich and work less, then you are on the wrong path. One should be working on enjoying the journey not thinking about the destination. The riches-seekers never reach it."
SOUTH CAROLINA: Noah Thomas Leask, President, and CEO of ISHPI

"Be collaborative with your staff, your customers, and your vendors or suppliers. The more you trust the team knowledge and wisdom of those around you, the more quickly you can recognize and adapt to changes, provide better products or services, and the stronger your organization will be.
ALABAMA: Ellen Didier, President Red Sage Communications

"Build your business around your life, not your life around your business. This will give you the stamina to build a business with longevity."
RHODE ISLAND: Brenda Brock, founder, formulator and CEO of Farmaesthetics

"Develop a daily P&L and ask yourself 'Are we making money today or losing money today?' This will allow for you to fix a problem quickly or continue to do the things that work."
WASHINGTON: Jill Blankenship, CEO Frontline Call Center

"First, you have to be passionate about your business because having your own business is not a job it is a way of life. Second, create (and articulate) your vision for the business and then be relentless in executing your go-to-market strategies and tactics. A solid plan is important; hard work and execution are critical."
WISCONSIN: Tom Nieman, Owner Fromm Family Foods

"Growing a business is about taking risks in a competitive environment, while continuing to build and maintain a solid reputation that your company delivers the utmost customer service. And very importantly, any business owners should strive to surround themselves with trustworthy, reliable people who support their company's mission and values."
WASHINGTON D.C.: Tom. J. Loftus, President, Founder and CEO LS Technologies LLC
Starting up a business is not always easy but making the right decisions, consultations, and proper researching will help you scale through and be successful.
You must clearly define your goals. If you don’t, you’ll never be able to tick them off and measure how you’ve performed.
