KURIA K. OWITI: ART GIVES ME THE ABILITY TO EXPRESS MY INNER-SELF
THE INTERVIEW:
By: Thomas Chiedozie Williams
Hello Leslie, When did you start your Art?
My art started a very long time ago
ever since I can remember, I have always had an interest in artistic things.
How long ago, can you remember when you first express the artist in you?
My very first memory of me expressing my artistic side was in kindergarten when we had music and art as a subject that was when I was the happiest.
I remember I used to stick photographs on our old TV because I found it interesting, I also remember molding a rhino from clay.
Did you have any mentors then?
One of my mom's colleagues was an artist, and he showed me neat tricks to draw simple figures which I still remember to this day,
later on, I sketched now and then just for fun practicing my skills
but not very serious because art was not a subject in school anymore.
What other subjects caught your interest back then in school?
I loved the sciences cause they had a lot of figures, geography because I also involved drawing,I still found myself enjoying finding ways of sketching. So I loved all the subjects that included some drawing.
After high school was art your professional focus?
After clearing high school, I wasn't sure of what I wanted to do with my life, but I knew I loved art as well as sports, so one day by coincidence I came across a small college that was teaching animation and that's how I got into this industry
How serious did take the Art?
I was just animating for fun
but then I found purpose in my work when I developed channeled my passion for all things African and thought it would be cool to make animations with African characters so that the African demographic could see cartoons that look like them.
What animation characters story have you done?
Till today I still have not found a cohesive enough story to work on, but I have several ideas that have potentials
I'm now based in Los Angeles doing animation while learning some new skills such as VR and concept design
I love what I do and can see myself doing it for a long time.
